Let's start with a baseline. First off, I wouldn't offer to join if I weren't willing to. So the issue of what I want is handled by virtue of me having offered.

Maybe you have a different impression, but the people I've met here don't seem to be the type to let others go off and handle things for them, when they can help.

Let me rephrase. If someone else said they were going to look for your items, you would be fine with leaving them to do it, and take no action to recover those items on your own?

Then why not go with them? Two heads are better than one.

By which I mean, two people on a task have more resources and options than just one, and are therefore more likely to succeed.
